| Most flattering email [26.Jan.2007] |
I have recieved the most warm and flattering email today from one of my fans. Carolyn Zardoust recently learning in University to be a teacher and wanted to write about painting I sent to her in 2002... oh my, time flies isnt it? This what she wrote to me... "Maria, here is the art paper. :) I was given the choice of writing a paper about Monet or da Vinci, or Mona Lisa, or Picasso. I chose you because you and your painting means more to me than the rest of those guys. Love, Carolyn" ART PAPER "Little Angel" was painted in 2002. It is an oil painting 8 ½ "x11" in size and was painted as a personal gift from the artist, Maria van Bruggen. Maria van Bruggen, http://www.elfies-world.com/bio.php, to myself. It includes her signature and the year in which it was done. From the bottom up to almost the middle of the painting, there is a field of flowers. It has shades and tints of pinks, purples and reds. The artist’s brush strokes are playful and layered into a slight impasto in the case of the flowers. The detail in the flowers is left primarily up to the viewer’s imagination. The angel is bright yellow. Its wings are feathery, wispy strokes of white, purple and pink. The artist took more time painting the yellow. This allows the child itself appears to be calm and serene, whereas everything around it is almost in a blur. The angels’ body is in proportion to its head. Its wings seem to be a bit larger than the standard wings of an angel normally depicted in artwork. You see the angel viewed as from behind so you annot tell whether it is supposed to be male or female. The angel is surrounded by the clear night sky expressed in deep blues and violets. It is looking into space. The sky is filled with stars painted in white. The strokes are whisked on quickly, leaving an area in the top left corner without paint. The artist has intended to pull the viewer into seeing what "could be there" by using implied lines instead of what is obvious to the eye. This is also expressed by the lack of paint in areas around the bottom and the bottom left of the piece. Included in the color scheme is a balance of yellow and blue. Red however is left unbalanced with the absence of green. The artist may have done this intentionally to express the emotions of love and the desire to visit her friend who lives across the planet. As symbolism is expresses its own language, this artist uses color to put emotion into words. "The remoteness of the muted colors and the lack of narrative create the sense that the artist is illustrating a mood rather than a moment from real life," as quoted from Art in the Modern Era, better explains this concept Art in the Modern Era, Amy Dempsey, Harry N. Abrams, Inc.,publishers, pg. 43. The implied lines compose a pattern that divides the painting in half width-wise and brings to attention on side of the painting in a triangular pattern. (Fig. 1.1) This outline creates a much needed balance to the painting. Understanding Art, Eighth edition, 2007, Lois Fichner-Rathus, Thomson Wadworth, pg. 30-31 "Little Angel" is a very special painting to me for two reasons. First and foremost, I treasure it because Maria painted it on the spur of the moment just for me and secondly, because it expresses spirituality and nurturing of the child within ourselves. It inspires the imagination because angels do not exist in the natural world. This speaks to the child within me because I believe in their existence. The painting says to me, "Don’t forget about the fun you had with your imagination." I see the beauty of the child and instantly I’m reminded of how I feel when I gaze into my children, especially that first time when they finally made their appearance. That is healing to my spirit. I believe the brightness of the angel is meant to represent the inner child; our never-ending wish to laugh and be free amidst emotions that can hinder our progress. Considering the place where the Maria van Bruggen was living when she painted this speaks volumes for the health and balance of her spirit. "Little Angel" was painted at the artists home in Israel. It’s my belief that this painting is meant to open the mind to believing that love has no limit or social boundaries; that anything is possible if we just make a choice to listen to love and not to hate. |

| Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... [ 9.Feb.2006] |
And because I reiceved so many wonderful comments on my last painting Magic old as Eternity on my Artwanted gallery and on Epilogue, I decided to put some of them that was a real stories specially here... THANK YOU SO MUCH!
"She is wonderful. Love the bell. It's something an elderly lots-of-water-under-the-bridge witch would do. When I'm old I'll wear purple and a red hat....or in this case a bell on my hat." "I agree with you. Delightful painting, wonderful colors too. Artists and art students I know have told me that they enjoy sketching older people and people who are overweight because there are more interesting lines and details to study than there are on thin, plain 'generic' model types." "DEAR MARIA...I ADMIRE THIS PICTURE MORE THAN MANY OTHERS... FOR ALL THE TRUE WORDS YOU HAVE WRITTEN TO GO WITH IT...I AGREE WITH THEM ALL ADVENTLY...IT IS ABOUT TIME WE BECOME REAL AND DEPART FROM THE PERFECT PLASTIC WORLD OF AIR BRUSHED PHTOS AND FAKE IMAGES..ALL GROW OLDER...JUST ASK ELIZABETH TAILOR...IT IS THE SOUL THAT GROWS MORE LOVELY WITH YEARS OF WISDOM AND EXPERIENCE..IT IS THE SPIRIT THAT IS THE LIFE FORCE THAT BRINGS THE FLESH ALIVE WHICH OTHERWISE ARE MERE PARTICALS OF DUST...I AM SADDENED TOO BY THE WAY MANY FOCUS ON HUGE JUGS OF FAT ON A WOMENS' CHEST AND THE CLEAVAGE OF THEIR BEHIND...IT IS A SHALLOW PERCEPTION THAT I HAVE SEEN CELEBRATED BY MANY EVEN HERE ON THIS SITE...BRAVO TO YOU DEAR ONE FOR BEING TRUE AND REAL AND FOR LETTING YOUR HEART SPEAK...I AM NOT AGAINST BEAUTY ONLY THE MOLD AND EXPLOITATION OF THE HUMAN BODY AS IF IT WERE A THING TO SELL THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN A MIND...I SEE IT ALL AROUND SO MANY IMAGES ESPECIALLY CREATED AND VENRATED BY SOME OF THE BEST ARTISTS SOME WOMEN TOO ...AND MEN MORE THAN OTHERS. SOMEONE NEEDS TO SAY ...HEY!!! WE ARE MORE THAN JUST THE SKIN WE ARE IN...GUYS!!! IT IS ABOUT TIME WE SEE THE REALITY OF WHAT A HUMAN IS...AND LOOK TO THE SOUL...THANK YOU FOR YOUR TRUTH. I LOVE THIS PICTURE VERY MUCH...SINCERELY CB" "I agree with everything you have said Maria, and even though I do tend to draw or paint the normal bimbo type fairies, I do spread my wings occasionally and draw something different. For instance I have an Elf with stubble, and an old wizard or two. They aren't the most popular of my images, but who cares :D" "It's beautiful, and the words next to it express it even more. They all seem to need no till just tiny bits of clothes, and it's very irritating. There's a whole world of amazing things in front of you, which you can make amazing things of, but when you keep drawing girls in little bikini's with lots of make-up, it's just not worth it all. I really like this one a lot; if I could do such things with watercolor. :)" "I agree with you, old faces are magical, full of wisdom and knowing. That is what makes them so lovely to look at. This is a wonderful piece." "So many artists would agree with you about the "babes" in fairyland! your lady here is so much fuller in her grace and her charm. There's definitely wisdom and a bit of girlishness in her eyes! I love the colours and the Autumn/Winter symbols." |
| VERY special fans :) [ 8.Feb.2006] |
And here is a little dedication for my VERY special fans from the Basic school OLV where my son Daniel is learning. I was touched and happy to be invited by teacher to give a special presentation about me and my art. It was LOTS of fun, I explained why I actually paint fantasy, showed my creations, explained differences in between fantasy creatures and than we had a time for painting games (where I was painting on a school board) and questions.
But the most special part of it that after this lecture kids were painting and creating things inspired by my art and fantasy. I opened a special part in my gallery for their beautiful creations - please visit and leave them some comments! :) - just click here: KIDS CREATIONS - MY SPECIAL FANS |

| About my style from my fans.... [12.May.2005] |
Once in awhile every artist has his "down" days where he/she is wondering about how recognisable his style is.....I had to say a HUGE THANK YOU for my fans for their support and feedback that they always give me.... "You DO have a style, first it's about color, your images always have beautiful colors in them. Second, your images always portray emotions that are usually beautiful feelings. You always manage to show a person's true feelings using only a few lines of a pencil." "Maria, you have a very recognizable style. it is very clean and hm... how to say. i can always pick out your work before seeing that you did it. what i like the most about your work is that it has it's own voice, and i don't think i've ever seen something that you've painted that didn't speak on it's own." "Your style is very gentle and sweet and soft. I guess I have to say what the other person said, it's hard to describe, but I know it when I see it. Your pictures always treat the subject with respect and love, and it's not about being perfect, like some models always are, just being beautiful in each one's own unique way." "I think you do have a distinct style Maria. Your art is very close with nature, with the animals and flowers you include. I always recognise your art and I greatly admire it." "YES, you have a VERY recognizable style. First of all your faces are very distinctive. And then the little details you add in - sometimes they're a little funny (like frogs), and they give your paintings a slightly humorous touch that keeps them from being too... I donnu how to describe it... " "Yes of course you have your own special style! I would describe it by the characteristic way you handle your lineart- like painting those fairies and flowers just comes so natural to you, like second nature; you have a very light touch. Also your painting technique is instantly recognisable by the colour palette you use, which is quite light in colour also. There is an easy, gentle spirit that can be found in your work that can make people very happy and at ease with the world :)" "You have a VERY recognizable style, Maria. Whenever I surf artwanted, or vote in their contests, I don't need to read the copyright to know it's you." |
